Smart locators and DOM selection

Understand how a pin identifies an element while you annotate a changing page.

5 min
Visual example: Smart selection outlines the element under the cursor so you can walk the DOM with the arrow keys before pinning.

  1. 1Resilient fingerprints
  2. 2Live-page confidence
1

Resilient fingerprints

An element pin combines a stable selector, DOM path, tag, id, name, test id, role, classes, text, label, and geometry instead of trusting one fragile path.

2

Live-page confidence

While the annotation overlay is open, Pinar reevaluates the selector and structure so markers follow elements that move as the page updates.

  • Generated-looking class names are dropped from the fingerprint.
  • Unreadable cross-origin frames remain unresolved instead of being guessed.
  • Unique ids and test ids take priority when they identify one element.
  • A structural DOM path is stored when no stable attribute is unique.
  • Area pins use their geometry and do not pretend to identify one DOM element.
